How a Ball Can Support Movement

European Week of Sport is a time to celebrate the different ways we can stay active and enjoy movement.

At Siel Bleu Ireland, we use a range of activities and equipment in our classes to make movement enjoyable and accessible. One simple piece of equipment we often use is a ball.

A ball can bring back memories

For many of us, a ball can bring back memories of playing football, passing a ball with friends or taking part in games when we were younger.

Using a ball in a Siel Bleu Ireland class can bring some of that fun back, while encouraging movement in a way that is suitable for each person.

More than just a game

Ball activities can be adapted in lots of different ways. They can help to:

  • Build strength
  • Challenge balance
  • Improve coordination
  • Encourage movement
  • Add variety and fun to a class

Activities can be adapted to suit different abilities, meaning everyone can take part at their own level.

Movement for everyday life

The movements we practise in our classes can also support everyday activities. Reaching, passing, throwing, catching and moving with a ball can all encourage coordination, mobility and strength.

It’s about enjoying movement, trying something different and finding activities that work for you.

Celebrating movement

European Week of Sport reminds us that movement does not have to look the same for everyone. It can be a walk, a class, a game with a ball or simply finding more opportunities to move throughout the day.
