When you think of health and wellness, you’ll often picture things like exercise, nutrition, and sleep, but creativity? It’s just as important! Engaging in creative activities like journaling, painting, music, or storytelling can be an amazing way to support your mental and emotional well-being, regardless of your age and ability.
At Siel Bleu Ireland, we’re passionate about helping people live well through movement, connection, and joy. Through creative expression, you can experience all three!
What is Creative Expression?
Any activity that allows you to express yourself in ways that are meaningful to you! This could look like:
- Journaling or writing: capture any thoughts, memories, or stories. This allows you to reflect on your experiences, and you can learn a lot about yourself!
- Painting or drawing: even something as simple as doodling can be therapeutic. Remember to focus on how it feels and not necessarily how it looks.
- Playing or listening to music: it can lift your mood and bring back fond memories. Creating playlists can help you organise music for each mood.
Why Does It Matter for Wellbeing?
Creative activities can help:
- Reduce stress and anxiety.
- Stimulate the brain and support memory.
- Boost mood and strengthen self-esteem.
- Encourage self-expression when words are hard to find.
- Create a sense of purpose and joy.
For older adults, especially those facing health challenges or social isolation, creativity can be an amazing outlet.
Creativity and Connection
One of the most beautiful things about creative expression is that it brings people together. Sharing your work with those around you allows you to connect on a deeper level than just talking to one another.
Creativity is for everyone.
No matter your age, background, or ability, you deserve a space to express yourself freely and joyfully. Let this be your reminder that wellness is not just about movement. It’s also about what moves you.
One of the most beautiful things about creative expression is that it brings people together. Sharing your work with those around you allows you to connect on a level deeper than just talking to one another. At Siel Bleu, many of our classes include music and dancing, which encourage participants to express themselves and share the joy with others. Whether you’re dancing, singing, or simply colouring together, these moments of creativity spark bonding and communication
